हनुमान वायु और अंजनी के पुत्र थे। एक बार जब हनुमान एक बच्चा था तो वह सूर्य के साथ खेलना चाहता था क्योंकि उसने सोचा था कि यह आग का गोला है। दूसरे देवताओं को गुस्सा आ गया और इंद्र जो सभी देवताओं के प्रमुख थे, ने अपना वज्र उस पर फेंक दिया। हनुमान पृथ्वी पर दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हो गए और बुरी तरह घायल हो गए। जब वायु को पता चला कि क्या हुआ तो वह अन्य देवताओं से बहुत नाराज हो गया। उसने हड़ताल पर जाकर बदला लेने का फैसला किया। पृथ्वी पर कोई हवा नहीं बहने के कारण लोगों की मौत हो गई। इससे असंतुलन पैदा हो गया। इस मुद्दे को हल करने के लिए भगवान ब्रह्मा ने अन्य देवताओं के साथ वायु के स्थान का दौरा किया और उनसे अनुरोध किया कि वे अपने क्रोध को जाने दें और हवाओं को फिर से बहने दें। उन्होंने असंख्य वरदानों के साथ हनुमान को भी स्नान कराया जिसने हनुमान को बहुत शक्तिशाली भगवान बना दिया।
वायु को गंधर्वों का शासक भी कहा जाता है। ये आकाशीय प्राणी हैं जो जंगलों में रहते हैं। उन्हें मेरु पर्वत के तल पर रहने वाले आत्माओं के राजा के रूप में भी जाना जाता है। एक बार कुछ अनबन के कारण वायु ने मेरू पर हमला करने का फैसला किया। उसने मजबूत हिंसक हवाओं को उड़ाकर अपने शीर्ष को काट देने का फैसला किया। गरुड़ जो भगवान विष्णु का पर्वत है, मेरु के बचाव में आया और अपने पराक्रमी पंख फैलाकर उसकी रक्षा की। ऐसा एक साल तक चलता रहा। अंत में, गरुड़ थक गए और ब्रेक लेने का फैसला किया। यह तब है जब वायु ने हमला किया और मेरु की चोटी को तोड़ दिया। यह हिंद महासागर में गिर गया और लंका द्वीप बन गया।
वायु का विवाह भारती और स्वस्ति से हुआ जो भगवान विश्वकर्मा की पुत्रियाँ थीं। वायु मारुत के भी प्रमुख हैं जो तूफान देवता हैं और इंद्र के साथ गठबंधन में काम करते हैं। कुछ लिपियों में वायु का उल्लेख एक बहुत ही विनम्र देवता के रूप में किया गया है जो इंद्र के निर्देशों के अनुसार काम करता है। उन्हें भगवान विष्णु का एक मजबूत भक्त भी माना जाता है। ऋग्वेद के अनुसार वायु को रुद्र के रूप में भी वर्णित किया गया है जो शिव का एक रूप है। वायु विश्व की उत्तर-पश्चिम दिशा के संरक्षक भी हैं।

In certain texts, Vayu is known to be the son of Vishnu and Lakshmi. In other versions, he is referred to as the son of sage Kashyap and Aditi. Vayu is also a very close friend of the Lord of Indra - the god of senses and rains. They have been shown working together. Vayu resides within our bodies as Prana. There are 5 basic pranas that reside within the human body and they regulate all the human body functions. Vayu is one of the chief gods along with Agni and Varun and holds a very supreme position. He is known to be an angry god who gets offended very easily. Vayu is the father of the legendary god Hanuman. He is also the father of Bheema, one of the Pandavas from Mahabharata.
Hanuman was the son of Vayu and Anjani. Once when Hanuman was a kid he wanted to play with the Sun as he thought it to be a ball of fire. The other Gods got angry and Indra who was the chief of all gods threw his Vajra on him. Hanuman crashed on Earth and was wounded badly. When Vayu got to know what happened he got very furious with the other gods. He decided to take revenge by going on a strike. With no wind flowing on the Earth, people suffocated to death. This created imbalance. To resolve this issue lord Brahma with other deities visited Vayu's place and requested him to let go of his anger and let the winds flow again. They also showered Hanuman with innumerable boons which made Hanuman a very mighty God.
Vayu is also known to be the ruler of Gandharvas. These are celestial beings who live in the forests. He is also known to the king of spirits residing at the bottom of Mount Meru. Once due to some rift Vayu decided to attack Meru. He decided to chop off its top by blowing strong violent winds. Garuda who is the mount of Lord Vishnu came to Meru's rescue and protected him by spreading his mighty wings. This went on for a year. Finally, Garuda got tired and decided to take a break. This is when Vayu attacked and broke Meru's top. This fell into the Indian ocean and became the island of Lanka.
Vayu was married to Bharti and Swasti who were the daughters of Lord Vishwakarma. Vayu is also the chief of Maruts who are storm deities and work in alliance with Indra. Some scripts mention Vayu as a very humble god who works as per Indra's directions. He is also known to be a strong devotee of Lord Vishnu. According to Rigveda Vayu is also described as Rudra who is a manifestation of Shiva. Vayu is also the guardian of the northwest direction of the world.
