Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap


The Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap (or Mantra) is a Hindu prayer that is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is also known as Mrityunjaya (the conqueror of death). The mantra is considered to be one of the most powerful mantras in Hinduism and is believed to bestow immortality and spiritual liberation upon those who recite it regularly. The mantra is: "Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Mamritat"

  • "Pushtivardhanam" - This phrase means "nourisher of life" and is a reference to Lord Shiva's ability to give life and vitality to those who worship him.

  • "Urvarukamiva" - This phrase means "like a ripe cucumber" and is a reference to the idea that Lord Shiva can free a person from the cycle of reincarnation, just as a ripe cucumber is easily separated from the vine.

  • "Bandhanan" - This word means "binding" and refers to the idea that Lord Shiva can free a person from the bonds of karma and reincarnation.

  • "Mrityor" - This word means "death"

  • "Mukshiya" - This word means "liberate"

  • "Mamritat" - This word means "immortal"

So, the mantra roughly translates to "We worship Lord Shiva, the three-eyed one, who is fragrant and nourisher of life, who is like a ripe cucumber, who liberates from the cycle of reincarnation and death, who grants immortality." It is believed that reciting this mantra can bring blessings and protection from Lord Shiva, also it is considered as one of the most powerful mantras in Hinduism and is believed to bestow immortality and spiritual liberation upon those who recite it regularly.


This mantra is to be recited as many times as possible. There are different ways to recite the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, some people recite it 108 times, some do it for a specified number of days, and some recite it for a specified number of hours. It is said that the more you recite this mantra, the better and faster it will work.
