Mangala the Lord of the planet Mars is the 3rd among Navagraha deities and is known for his fiery nature. He is the son of the goddess Earth, Bhumi, and Lord Vishnu. Scriptures state that he was born when Lord Vishnu in his Varaha avatar freed goddess Earth from the clutches of demon Hiranyaksha. However, in another version, he is known to be the son of Shiva and Earth goddess Bhumi. Shiva was grief-stricken after Sati who was Shiva's 1st wife immolated herself in the fire. He went into deep penance to free himself from the pain of losing his beloved. One day while meditating a drop of sweat from his forehead fell on Earth. This drop took the form of a little boy. The little boy was alone and started crying helplessly. This is when Bhumi the Earth goddess took up the form of a woman and started nurturing him as her son. Soon Shiva saw this and announced that this boy shall be known as the son of Earth. This son was Mangala who is also known as Bhauma, the son of Bhumi.
Bhauma went to Kashi and started worshipping Shiva. Pleased with his devotion Bhauma was made the lord of planet Mars. His devotion made him part of Navagraha as well. Some Scriptures associate Lord Murugan or Kartikeyan with Mangala as well. Kartikeyan was Shiva’s 1st born. He was a warrior who was also nurtured by Goddess Earth. Mangala is also known for his fiery nature and warrior-like qualities. He governs the aspects of courage and confidence, youth, dynamism initiation, etc. The negative influence of Mars causes anger, stubbornness, recklessness, and selfish behavior. The presence of Mars in certain specific houses can lead to a dosha called Manglik dosha. A person born with Mangik dosha should ensure that he or she marries a person with Manglik dosha as well because a person with Manglik dosha marrying a non-Manglik person can have some serious bad effects and can lead to the untimely death of the non-Manglik as well. The day of Tuesday is dedicated to Lord Mangala. Mangala is friendly with Sun, Moon, and Jupiter. He is hostile towards Mercury and neutral with Venus and Saturn.
