क्या आपने हाल ही में चंद्रमा को देखा है? हम सभी ने अपने प्रिय चंद्रमा को मोम और वेन के अंतहीन चक्रों से गुजरते हुए देखा है। क्या हम इसके पीछे की पौराणिक कथा जानते हैं?
प्राचीन हिंदू लिपियों के अनुसार चंद्रमा का भगवान चंद्र है। चंद्रा को कई अन्य नामों से भी जाना जाता है जैसे कि रजनीपति, अरिसुता, आदि। चंद्रा का जन्म तीन बार माना जाता है। शुरुआत में, उन्हें भगवान ब्रह्मा द्वारा बनाया गया था। बाद में वे ऋषि अत्रि और उनकी पत्नी अनुसूया के पुत्र के रूप में पैदा हुए। अंतिम रूप से एक श्राप के कारण वह खुद को समुद्र के अंदर डूबा लेती है लेकिन देवी लक्ष्मी के साथ समुद्र मंथन के प्रसिद्ध आयोजन के दौरान पुनर्जन्म लेती है। यही कारण है कि इसे लक्ष्मी के भाई के रूप में भी जाना जाता है।
अनसूया, ऋषि अत्रि की पवित्र पत्नी एक शक्तिशाली महिला थी। उसे त्रिदेव के गर्भ में धारण करने का वरदान प्राप्त था। उसने दत्तात्रेय (विष्णु का अवतार), दुर्वासा (शिव का अवतार) और चंद्र (ब्रह्मा का अवतार) को जन्म दिया। दुर्वासा ने अपनी आध्यात्मिक शक्तियों को बढ़ाने के लिए गंभीर तपस्या करने का निर्णय लिया। वह जंगलों की ओर निकल गया। चंद्र ने चंद्रमा को संभालने और चंद्रमा के भगवान बनने का फैसला किया। दत्तात्रेय ने अपने माता-पिता के साथ वापस रहने का फैसला किया।
चंद्रमा पर शासन करने वाले चंद्राओं ने उसे अपार शक्तियां दीं, क्योंकि वह नवग्रह देवताओं में से एक था, जिसे मानव जाति द्वारा अत्यधिक पूजा की जाती थी। चंद्रा ने कई शक्तिशाली अनुष्ठान भी किए जो आगे उनकी शक्तियों में शामिल हुए। उनकी शक्तियों ने उन्हें सर्वोच्च दिखने के साथ-साथ अच्छा भी बना दिया। वह जल्द ही सभी अप्सराओं के बीच आकर्षण का केंद्र बन गया।
तारा जो बृहस्पति की पत्नी थी (बृहस्पति के भगवान और सभी देवताओं के मुख्य शिक्षक) भी चंद्रा के मोहक रूप के लिए गिर गई। जल्द ही उसके साथ एक संबंध था और उसने बृहस्पति को छोड़ने का फैसला किया। व्यभिचार के इस कृत्य से क्रोधित बृहस्पति देवताओं की मदद लेने गए। यह तब है जब इंद्र (स्वर्ग का राजा) ने हस्तक्षेप किया और चंद्रा को तारा को जाने देने का आदेश दिया। तारा को अपने पति के पास वापस जाने के लिए मजबूर होना पड़ा।
हालांकि, वापस आने के बाद, बृहस्पति को पता चला कि वह चंद्र के बच्चे के साथ गर्भवती थी। उसने बुद्ध (बुध के भगवान) को जन्म दिया, जो चंद्र के नाजायज बच्चे थे। बृहस्पति चंद्र के बच्चे को उठाना नहीं चाहते थे और तारा को बच्चे को चंद्र को सौंपने के लिए कहा।
इस बीच, चंद्रा बहुत उदास था क्योंकि उसने अपना प्रेमी तारा खो दिया था। अंतरंग संबंधों के लिए उनकी इच्छा बढ़ती रही। यह तब है जब उन्होंने राजा दक्ष की 27 बेटियों की शादी करने का फैसला किया। दक्ष सहमत हो गए, लेकिन केवल एक शर्त पर कि चंद्र अपनी सभी पत्नियों को समान रूप से प्यार करेंगे। हालांकि, शादी के बाद, वह अपनी पत्नी रोहिणी की ओर आंशिक होने लगे। रोहिणी उनकी पसंदीदा थी क्योंकि उन्होंने अपने बेटे बुड्ढा की सबसे ज्यादा देखभाल की। उनकी बाकी पत्नियाँ अपने बेटे पर ज्यादा ध्यान नहीं देती थीं। जल्द ही चंद्रा अपनी बाकी पत्नियों के बारे में पूरी तरह से भूल गया और अपना सारा समय रोहिणी के साथ बिताया।
चंद्रा के व्यवहार से चिंतित, पत्नियां उनके पिता दक्ष के पास गईं और उनके प्रति चंद्रा के रवैये के बारे में शिकायत की। दक्ष नाराज हो गए क्योंकि चंद्रा ने अपनी सभी बेटियों के साथ समान व्यवहार करने का अपना वादा तोड़ दिया था। उसने चंद्र का सामना किया और उसे अपने तरीके बदलने के लिए कहा। हालांकि, चंद्रा ने अपना व्यवहार नहीं बदला।
इससे दक्ष को और क्रोध आया और उन्होंने आगे बढ़कर चन्द्र को मृत्यु का श्राप दे दिया। शाप के प्रभाव प्रकट होने लगे और चन्द्र गंभीर रूप से बीमार हो गए। ग्रह पर बहुत आतंक और तबाही मची हुई थी क्योंकि चन्द्र एक सामान्य भगवान नहीं थे और बहुत कुछ पृथ्वी पर जीवन के लिए उन पर निर्भर था। भय से त्रस्त चंद्र और अन्य देवताओं ने एक समाधान के लिए भगवान ब्रह्मा से मिलने का फैसला किया। पूरी कहानी सुनने के बाद ब्रह्मा ने सुझाव दिया कि चंद्र को प्रभास के मंदिर में जाना चाहिए और वहां बैठकर महा मृत्युंजय जाप के साथ भगवान शिव की पूजा करनी चाहिए क्योंकि केवल शिव ही उन्हें बचा सकते थे। चंद्रा तीर्थ (अब सोमनाथ मंदिर के रूप में जाना जाता है) में गया और वहाँ शिव से प्रार्थना की। उन्होंने महा मृत्युंजय जाप का सवा लाख बार जप किया। उनकी पूजा से प्रसन्न होकर भगवान शिव उनके सामने प्रकट हुए और उनसे वरदान की इच्छा करने को कहा। चंद्रा ने जीने की कामना की और अपनी अमरता को बहाल करने के लिए कहा।
चूँकि श्राप किसी साधारण व्यक्ति ने नहीं दिया था बल्कि स्वयं भगवान शिव ने पूरे शाप को वापस नहीं लिया था। हालाँकि चंद्रा अनंत काल तक जीवित रहने के लिए, शिव ने उसे अपने सिर पर धारण करने का फैसला किया। उन्होंने उसे यह भी आश्वासन दिया कि वह अनंत काल तक जीवित रहेगा, लेकिन अभिशाप के प्रभाव के कारण हर पखवाड़े में आकार में वृद्धि और कमी के अंतहीन चक्र से गुजरना होगा। सोमनाथ तीर्थ भी दुनिया को ज्ञात उन 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक है जहां शिव ने स्वयं प्रकट हुए थे।
चंद्रा के अंतहीन मोम और वेन चक्र की एक और कहानी है। एक बार भगवान कुबेर द्वारा आयोजित एक भोज के बाद, भगवान गणेश कैलाश लौट रहे थे। वह अपने माउंट मूसा (दिव्य माउस) पर था। अचानक उन्हें रास्ते में एक सांप का सामना करना पड़ा। मुशा डर गया और कांपने लगा। इसके कारण गणेश असंतुलित होकर गिर गए। जब वह अपने पेट पर गिर गया, गणेश ने कुबेर के स्थान पर खाया हुआ सभी भोजन उल्टी कर दिया। चंद्रा ने यह सब देखा और गणेश की अवस्था को देखकर हँसने लगा। गणेश ने उसे शाप दिया और कहा कि वह अपनी चमक खो देगा और सड़ जाएगा।
इससे डरकर चंद्रा ने गणेश को माफ़ करने के लिए कहा। गणेश ने अपने शाप के प्रभाव को कम किया और कहा कि चन्द्र आकार में 15 दिनों के लिए कम हो जाएगा और फिर अगले 15 दिनों के लिए आकार में वृद्धि होगी।
चंद्रा को 10 घोड़ों या एक मृग के रथ पर सवार दिखाया गया है। भगवान चंद्र को समर्पित कई मंदिर भी हैं। वैदिक ज्योतिष में भी चन्द्र महत्वपूर्ण स्थान रखता है। वह माइंड का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है। चन्द्र पृथ्वी पर जल निकायों के आवागमन को भी नियंत्रित करता है। वह वनस्पति, प्रजनन और गर्भावस्था के लिए भी जिम्मेदार है।

The Lord of the Moon as per ancient Hindu scripts is Chandra. Chandra is also known by several other names like Rajnipati, Arisuta, etc. Chandra is believed to be born thrice. In the beginning, he was created by Lord Brahma. Later he was born as the son of sage Atri and his wife Anusuya. Lastly owing to a curse he submerged himself inside the ocean but was reborn during the famous event of Samudra Manthan along with Goddess Lakshmi. This is why is also known as the brother of Lakshmi.
Anusuya, the chaste wife of sage Atri was a powerful lady. She had a boon of bearing Tridev in her womb. She gave birth to Dattatrye (incarnation of Vishnu), Durvasa ( incarnation of Shiva), and Chandra (incarnation of Brahma). Durvasa decided to undertake severe penance to increase his spiritual powers. He left for the forests. Chandra decided to take over the Moon and become the Lord of the Moon. Dattatreya decided to stay back with his parents.
Chandra‘s reign over Moon gave him immense powers as he became one of the Navagraha deities who were immensely worshipped by mankind. Chandra also performed several powerful rituals which further added to his powers. His powers made him supremely good-looking as well. He soon became the center of attraction among all the Apsaras.
Tara who was the wife of Brihaspati ( Lord of Jupiter and the chief teacher of all the gods) also fell for Chandra's enticing looks. Soon she had an affair with him and decided to leave Brihaspati. Furious with this act of adultery Brihaspati went to seek help from the Gods. This is when Indra (the king of heaven) intervened and ordered Chandra to let go of Tara. Tara was forced to go back to her husband.
However, after coming back, Brihaspati realized that she was pregnant with Chandra's child. She gave birth to Budha( Lord of Mercury) who was Chandra’s illegitimate child. Brihaspati did not want to raise Chandra’s child and asked Tara to handover the child to Chandra.
Meanwhile, Chandra was very depressed because he had lost his lover Tara. His desire for intimate relations kept growing. This is when he decided to marry the 27 daughters of King Daksha. Daksha agreed, but only upon one condition that Chandra would equally love all his wives. However, after marriage, he started becoming partial towards his wife Rohini. Rohini was his favorite as she cared for his son Budha the most. The rest of his wives didn’t pay much attention to his son. Soon Chandra completely forgot about the rest of his wives and spent all his time with Rohini.
Annoyed by Chandra's behavior, the wives went to their father Daksha and complained about Chandra's attitude towards them. Daksha was annoyed as Chandra had broken his promise to treat all his daughters equally. He confronted Chandra and asked him to change his ways. However, Chandra did not change his behavior.
This enraged Daksha further and he went ahead and cursed Chandra to death. The effects of the curse started to manifest and Chandra became seriously ill. There was a lot of panic and havoc created on the planet as Chandra was not a normal God and a lot was dependent on him for life to sustain on Earth. The fear-stricken Chandra and the other Gods decided to visit Lord Brahma for a solution. Upon hearing the entire story Brahma suggested that Chandra should visit the shrine of Prabhasa and sit there and worship upon God Shiva with Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap as only Shiva could save him. Chandra went to the shrine (Now known as the Somnath Temple) and sat there praying to Shiva. He chanted the Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap a hundred million times. Pleased with his worship Lord Shiva appeared before him and asked him to wish for a boon. Chandra wished to live and asked for his immortality to be restored.
Since the curse was not given by an ordinary person but Lord Daksha himself Shiva could not revoke the entire curse back. However for Chandra to live till eternity, Shiva decided to hold him on his head. He also assured him that he will live for eternity but will have to go through the endless cycle of increasing and decreasing in size every fortnight due to the effects of the curse. The Somnath shrine is also one of the 12 Jyotirlingas known to the world where Shiva manifested himself.
There is another story of Chandra’s endless wax and wane cycle. Once after a feast hosted by Lord Kubera, Lord Ganesha was returning to Kailash. He was on his mount Musha (the divine mouse). Suddenly they encountered a snake on their way. Musha got scared and started trembling. Because of this Ganesha imbalanced and fell. Since he fell on his stomach, Ganesha vomited all the food he had eaten at Kubera's place. Chandra saw all this and started laughing at Ganesha's state. Ganesha cursed him and said that he shall lose his lustre and decay. Scared Chandra asked Ganesha to forgive him. Ganesha calmed down and reduced the effect of his curse and said that Chandra shall reduce in size for 15 days and then increase in size for the next 15 days.
Chandra is depicted riding a chariot of 10 horses or an antelope. There are several temples dedicated to Lord Chandra as well. Chandra holds an important position in Vedic astrology as well. He represents the Mind. Chandra also regulates the movement of water bodies on Earth. He is also responsible for vegetation, fertility, and Pregnancy.
